Vr6 timing chain noise???

Hi all,

Just put a vr6 in my mk3 golf gti, finished fitting it a couple of days ago - seems to be a funny noise coming from the engine, not sure if its the timing chains.
It looks like they've been done before, so i'm not 100% sure if the noise is coming from the chains or not. Sometimes when i start it theres no noise at all and it sounds all ok, and then the noise will suddenly come after a while.
I need to replace my clutch, not sure if the noise is possibly coming from there but when i put my foot on the clutch the noise is still there, but sometimes it'll go and then come back again.
Don't know much about the vr engines, so wouldn't really know where to pinpoint the noise or where it could be coming from.
Dont know if theres anybody on here whos had the same or a similar problem or if theres anybody in the Birmingham area who i could drive to who knows a bit more about the  vr engine?
I have got a video of when i first start it and theres no noise and then when the noise is there but i'm not sure how to upload it???

I dont know to much about these motors myself but I did own a VR6 which did have a rattle from the timing chain.The sound on my old car seemed to come from the top of the head on the passanger side kinda rattled more when you reved the engine etc.The VR6 owners club is a good forum to join if you have a VR there is plenty of info on there about the VR

I would suggest it is in your best interest to change that chain asap!

cant you check the tension by taking the cam cover of?

You would have been better to replace the chains before fitting the engine, if it needs the chains doing your looking at engine back out.

It is major work to replace them.

Or gearbox out...

The chain don't normally fail on their own, it's the guides that break up first...

Hydraulic tensioner may be clogged/failing or your oil pressure may be low, this can give intermittant rattling of chain.
Best just to do the lot in one hit and buy a kit.

Can be done with the engine in car but is a bit tight and fiddley, always best to to belts and chains before you stuff it in

Just chuck some thicker oil and/or some sawdust in

With the engine running stick your head at the gearbox end of the head, if you hear a rattling sound, then as AudiA8Quattro said, its likely to be a failed chain guide. Mine rattles a little from time to time and I will be doing the chains etc when I do my rebuild but they have been like that for around a year now and has never got any worse or caused me any problems.
I suggest saving up a bit of money and getting them done but I dont think its life or death right now 
As already said, it can be done with the engine in situ, but for the sake of an extra gasket, a couple more bolts and a few more hoses, I would just take the engine out
