Golf GTI mk3 cutting out

Hi guys I have a 96 golf gti and keeps cutting out taken it to garage they charged me 350 quid replaced sparks ht leads dizzy head rotor arm and another new dizzy as well as replacing the crank shaft censor wire ! Woop me and the cars still cutting out its had a new battery and starter motor. What's happening I'm driving along and all of a sudden my rev counter fizzles and drops the car then won't start for 10 15 mins also AA checked coil pack they said that's fine they have been unable to fix the problem same as the garage

Not sure on the GTI, but on my VR6 a few years ago it kept cutting out as a few of the wires which go into the plug which connects to the MAF were cracked / corroded at their base.  It was difficult to spot, but found it in the end.  They would randomly loose contact with cornering and engine movement.

 I've unpluged the MAF and it seems to be running a lot better not cutting out like it did only under idleing but  I presume that's because I've unpluged it. What I don't understand is why the garage didn't find that as they've took me for everything I've got in the sence of replacing everything to so with misfireing ie leads sparks dizzy ect

Unplugging the Maf didn't seem to do the trick

Would these show up on an ECU reading ?
