Ok, I can speak from first hand experience of this! I had a flash red MK3 8v and I absolutely loved it, however it wasn't particularly fast and it was starting to show it's age (rust spots etc.)

I decided to make the jump into a MK4, bought a 52 plate 1.8t. I wasn't particularly impressed with it in standard guise, I liked the extra 'comforts' and gadgets that the Mk4 has, but in terms for performance it was mediocre.

As mentioned already, it's a very wallowy drive and not particularly fun. That said, some coilovers, upgraded bushes, some anniversary kit, wheels, exhaust and some engine upgrades along with a remap and it's a hell of a lot of fun
