MK3 8v gti drinking fuel
« on: 10 August 2012, 18:18 »
I filled the car up the other day with £60 of fuel, i have driven 106 miles mainly long journeys of 25 miles or more and it has used half a tank already.
Any ideas, am going to try changing the coolant sensor tomorrow but seems to be drinking alot.

I serviced it when i first bought it a month or so ago.
Will get some carb cleaner, have wiped out all of the excess oil.

See i genuinely can't understand this, i filled mine a few weeks ago and did a late night dash which involved a 300+ mile motorway trip doing 80+mph and i still had a quarter of a tank when i got home.

I've got a 400+ mile trip to do next week so will see if things improve. I used to be able to do the same trip in my bora on about £50 of fuel and I never hung around on the motorways on the late night drive home.

I always thought my 8v was crap on fuel when you consider how little power they have, even after replacing all the sensors, breathers and vacuum hoses. A good  scrub of the throttle body will help though and make sure you take it off so you can clean both sides of the butterfly.
Also, don't forget that the fuel tank and sender are very poorly designed so aren't always particularly accurate.

Anybody know if i can junk the crankcase breather and put either a catch can or a small breather on the block and block the other holes off?
That way i wouldnt need to keep cleaning my throttle body out
