Whats the highest mileage you would buy?
« on: 08 August 2012, 13:25 »
ive been browsing ebay recently for bargains and i tend to turn my nose up at anything with over 140k on the clock. kind of unfair though really when you think the mk1s are 30yrs old + .Just the thought of having to get the engine and gearbox rebuilt or changed scares me in a tight wad kind of way!
do you have mileage snobbery or doesnt it matter to you?

140K IS FAIR LOW ...

I've bought car with 120 + think that was high but realistically it is about average mileage for year considering most are 15+ years old ....

If it's a Mk1 or Mk2 then I'd be buying on the condition of the shell rather than the mileage of the engine. Possibly even so with a Mk3, although trying to find a rust free one would be nearly impossible

100k to 120k is nothing on a modern car these days if it has been well serviced and looked after.

I know what you mean. Anything upto about 160k I wouldn't worry too much about personally. Even for a daily, as long as its been maintained properly you will have a few years trouble free motoring. And considering the longest I've owned a car is 15 months, I probably wouldn't get to the stage where things go badly wrong!

my recent mk2 purchase has 189 on the clock & some rust that ive sorted, to be fair depends on what you want.. I paid £300, but already had an engine to change over to as it was a conversion i wanted so milage means naff all in that sense, but my saab did have almost 300k on it when it went.. still drove like new........

i had a load of cars on my watch list. I have a mk1 golf, 2 mk1 cabriolets, some mk2 gtis and some mk3 gtis as well as a corrado! lol.
I ended up buying a mk3 golf cabriolet with 129k on the clock, no history though :-(
I think your right about mk1/2 golfs now, you should look for body condition rather than engine mileage.
I also have in the back of my head what if i need to sell it, most people wouldnt touch a car with higher than 150k unless its to a fellow vw fan.

Mileage means nothing, it's the maintenance that is important, most cars I've bought have had between 150k-250k on them and they have been no problem.

Current cars 1995 Golf gti colour concept 2.0 8v 156,000 miles. bmw 316 1.9 129,000. yeah, life's good!
