MK3 Golf 16v belt tensioner delete??
« on: 06 August 2012, 22:26 »
I have to change my cam belt and tensioner soon, so I figured I would do the altinator tensioner at the same time! Then I started reading about serpentine kits for deleting AC and tensioners............

Now, my MK3 16v doesn't have AC anyways, but all the kits I have seen are for ABF engines in mk1 golf without power steering! Is there a kit for, or a way of deleting the altinator tensioner and keeping the power steering? I have spoken to the guy over at INA Engineering, and he says I can use the kit they do if I run an ABA power steering setup.......... I have rarely seen these engines, are they even available in this country? If anyone has done this or similar then it would be great for some help or ideas! Ideally I would love to run a set of direct to head throttle bodies, and apparently the serpentine kit gives better clearance for ITB's as well as clearing up the engine and bay area!

Also, whilst I'm at it, is it worth investing in different pulleys?

Cheers guys :)

Dan

The only way that would work is that you would need to go back to the old set up with an adjusting bar so you can still tighten the belt, which is a backward step to me.

Apparently I can use an alternator, backing plate and belt from a gti 8v as they use a spring tensioner! I remember my old 1.8 8v had a similarset up, is there any reason why either wouldn't work.that you could see? My friends corrado abf uses the older altinator with the bar tensioner. I agree it would be a step back, plus they look bloody ugly in comparison lol!
