Mk3 golf clearcoat headache.
« on: 06 August 2012, 14:41 »
hey,

i have a mk3 golf in Maritime Blue (la5e) and its gained a condition where the laquer doesnt want to stay on the car any longer. . it has come off in little pieces and its really frustrating as i dont just want to polish over the bare paint. a respray is out of the question as the car cost me £500 and as much as i love it too pieces its still a mk3 golf.

can anybody help me with trying to correct this apparently common issue?????

thanks in advance.

Any pics? Lacquer peel is a bit of a b!tch to sort, you could try very lightly sanding back the edge of the peel with a high grit sand paper to feather the edge in, however chances are it will just continue.

The only real way to sort it is to strip it back and respray it. Where on the car is it?

could just wetsand the edges of the laquer where its lifting, to remove any loose bits. Mask around it and spray with a can of laquer, then wetsand/polish the area till its flat (after its dried for 24 hours or so)

then get polishing the rest of it to try and stop it standing out too much.

not going to look great, well it might if you're any good at painting with a rattlecan.

I had lacquer peeling on my roof, and to repair lacquer it's the WHOLE panel that needs to be redone otherwise it'll just flake again. I decided to vinyl wrap my roof. That's stopped it and hidden it too

If it was the roof suggesting a vinyl wrap was my next step
