Torque wrench fail - Bolt sheared off
« on: 06 August 2012, 12:04 »
Was hoping to get the Golf running again as due to flooding and heavy rain I had a day off (no I wouldn't have been driving it outside!) So I started with attaching the new water pump. Unfortunately my old torque wrench had got nicked and the not so good one I bought locally either didn't click or I didn't hear it over the rain beating down on the garage roof, meaning I sheared off 1 of the 4 bolts inside the block  and damaged 2 of the others - at least got those 2 back out again though!

I was going to put a pic up of the stud in the block, but coz of the weather I can't get enough light for a decent pic. Anyway, there's just a little sticking out, but not enough to get pliers or mole grip on.

Having looked at the various techniques for removing sheared off bolts, I'm thinking I will go with welding a washer and nut to the end of the bolt and then using a socket to turn it out. Don't trust the steadiness of my hands drilling into the bolt, its more likely I'll end up in the block. A friendly neighbourhood welder has a shop just round the corner, with a sign saying he does home service, so when it finally stops raining I will ask him to pop round.

But I now need a new set of bolts - I'm thinking its probably best to by all 4 new as it could have been age rather than dodgy hearing or crap torque wrench that caused them to shear. I've tried having a look online, but can't see anywhere they are listed. I will try the independent supplier, though he's not had many of the parts I've wanted in stock yet (he keeps saying first week of September for everything I ask about ) There are no Volkswagen dealers in the Philippines - though there are a couple of Audi dealers miles away who might help as a last resort.

Here is the type of bolt - I have aircon, so need the ones that have 2 ends for the aircon compressor bracket to fit on. 2 shorter ones like in the pic, 2 slightly longer.

Does anyone know part numbers for these bolts? Or where I could find them online? Better yet does anyone have a spare set at home they wouldn't mind popping in the post? - I can send money by Paypal or a British cheque.

I think you're in for a new set from a VW dealer, to be honest.

With things like that, if it feels like it's tight enough, then it probably is.

A quick centre-pop in the middle and some careful drilling should see you right.  There's no chance you put the bolt in the wrong way round is there?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I wish I'd stuck to tightening it with my socket set, rather than reaching for my new torque wrench, no chance I would have over-tightened it then. The new wrench though is a huge long beast and because of the extra leverage it didn't feel that tight. Bolt definitely went in the right way round.

Do Audi dealers tend to stock VW parts in other parts of the world? I don't mind making the trip, but just don't want to waste most of a day (its 2 hours or more each way on the bus to the closest Audi dealer.) just to have them tell me they won't be able to get the parts in.

A LOT of the parts are the same,    cant you just ring them up and fire part numbers at them
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I can try phoning Audi - once the great Manila flood subsides, won't be anyone in work there for a day or 2 don't think. I will try a request in the part no. thread to ask about part numbers.

At the moment - while I'm annoyed about the bolts, I'm just glad I rented a flat with a raised garage, even though its 1 storey up, water was lapping round the bottom of the tyres yesterday, flood was 5ft deep plus outside.

+1
Also using it to undo......

I have one like this, which can be used to undo, over tighten and does not need unloading
