The problem with big barges that were expensive when new is they're still expensive to fix when they get old. You can very easily get a fault that costs more than you paid for the car to repair. Running one of these types of car requires at least a £1K slush fund, at least you have the vectra for daily duties though.

Very true, these cars can often be chosen in a rush because someone is thinking they're getting a bargain luxury car, but in reality they're very expensive with some very lucrative faults waiting to happen with large repair bills, even for parts alone. And at that age, they're hardly luxury anymore, since newer cars have upped their game over the years.
80% of your posts are total tripe, as they are mostly replies to sh1te posts created by the morons that, unfortunately this forum attracts.

How about a nice range rover, tough as boots and a diy proposition for maintenance as long as the suspension is ok and the fuel injection is smooth you can waft about with a flat cap on sneering at the prolitariat.

I've had 2 w124's both TE's and quite easily still the best cars I've ever had, built to do a million miles and last a hundred years, these proper old mercs are built like no other car...

And Lexus! Do me a favour, just a Toyota full of toys and cheap leather, 1k worth will be a proper turd!

I'm guessing mr C wants a proper autobahn cruiser, out of all that old stuff, only pre 95 mercs fit the bill, inexpensive parts and easy to fix, has to be the name of the game.
One owner mercs are still readily available, especially the E class cars, they were bought and kept like part of the family...

My father in law has a 1995 Lexus LS400 and although dull, it is the most comfortable car I've been in. It has a ridiculous amount of toys and will happily sit all day at 120 (in Germany). Silky smooth, utterly dependable and anonymous enough to not have anyone think of nicking it. However, it does have all the street cred of a fat nerdy kid in the football team

Therefore an utterly f**ked S-class is what the big man needs.

Any car is only boring if you drive it so.

Amen to that.  4.0 V8 and RWD.  I suspect that could be entertaining give a single roundabout.
an you know a big bmw will do that better than a lexus

Maybe so, but the Lexus will not break down!
Some have done 650,000 miles without a hitch! What BMW has done that?

7 series bmw if you can find one at that £1000 mark.

Better built than mercs and fully loaded!
