1992 clipper question
« on: 05 August 2012, 20:59 »
Evening all.. ive just been offered a 92 plate white clipper for £1k with 130,00 miles on the clock, all looks sound apart from the roof which has a couple of tears.
My question is,,,,roughly how much to have the roof replaced? Its the electrically operated one if that make a difference??
Thanks guys

I'm not sure these days as it's been so long since I had a cabby or the need to look it up... Someone else may have a better clue.

You could always have a crack yourself.

Last I heard it was 400 fitted, you could prob save half that if you did it your self, not a job I would like to tackle.

Nice save... If its not rotten then it shouldn't be too much of a money pit.  Mine stood for seven years and ran the same as it did.  They're pretty tough old cars.  Be good to see some pics of what you're working with.  Here to help if you have any queries.

Depends on where you go, I was at a meeting last month and one guy spent £700.00 and that was the hood alone, form Car Hoods Northern.

You can buy a mohair black top off E bay for £215.00, then you'll need HTC glue. I use wayside adhesives on e bay £19.00 a tin.

Sillicone sealant, rivets and back washers, new foam gasket seals too.

I reckon you could do a hood for around £300.00.
I have fitted a fair few of these and it's not that difficult, more time consuming than anything else.

things to look out for are the  rear window frame, tell tale signs of rusting out are stains on the parcel shelf and the rubber seal deforming, so peel it back and have a look.

It's a mare if the frames gone.

Rear cable channel, these rust if your unlucky and will need repairing before you put a new one on anyway.

Take into consideration the following, not just the hood condition, but the state of the headliner and the inter liner and top pad.

If the pad is worn, you get a poor finish on whatever you put on.
Headliner needs changing at the same time if it's ripped or so badly stained it won't clean up.
YOU cannot retrofit a headliner after a new hood has gone on as all the fixings are under the inter liner and pad and the hood it's self, no matter what anyone else tells you.

You could do a hood in a day easy, with all the right tools and glues etc ready to go.

i still haven't done mine and it will need doing as soon as i can

i decided though that I am not going to do it until i can afford to do everything... mohair hood, headliner, interliner, bag, cables &  stainless rear frame.. i priced it up last year buying everything separately and it came to about £600.. thats before getting someone else to fit it

there is a chap on mk1 oc who sells a lot of the things you need for it so have a look there

Black Mohair £215.00
Black Headliner for your Rivage Guy £165.00 to OEM spec.
Interliner and pad  £250.00 VW Heritage. 4 week back and special order or £175.00 for a full kit inc smoothing strips, rivets, backwashers, Install DVD and Sheet form the guy on the MK1OC.
Cables £20.00
Glue £20.00
Foam gaskets £20.00.

£615.00 for the stuff, maybe less if you shop around.

It ain't cheap but once it's done, you won't need to touch it for years, plus it's a good selling point.

I need to do mine as well, but I want a Classic sonnerland material one as fitted Originally but there 500.00 euros from Eurotops

Some headliners will clean up ok, but the padding and interliner are usually shot.

cheers
