I'm trying to get the air conditioning working on my son's Mk4 Golf GTi 2.0 1999 V-reg. I thought that it was just poor because it needed recharging so I took it to be done last week and although it was low on pressure, it didn't cure the problem.
It is a manual aircon system and it turned out that the clutch wasn't engaging on the compressor when you turned on the aircon switch. The fan also wasn't coming on.
I checked the voltage at the connection on the compressor and I was getting a constant 9 volts when the ignition was off and also when the aircon switch was either on or off.
I then gave the compressor 12 volts direct from the battery and the clutch was engaging fine.
I wanted to check the aircon pressure switch but when I removed the connector it turned out to be a 3 pin version.
I've checked all the fuses in the cabin and those on the battery and all are ok.
I warmed up the car and both the fans came on when it got hot.
I've searched various forums and have found some references to having a constant 9 volts but have not seen anyone posting what actually cured it.
I've also seen about a resistor fix for the fans but I don't know if this is relevant in this case.
1) Is there any way to check the 3 pin version of the pressure switch?
2) What could be causing the constant 9 volts?
3) Could the fan controller be causing any of this and is there any way to check it?
Any other suggestions would be gratefully received
