Mk V GTi Starting Problem

We have a 56 Reg Mk V Gti which has alwasy been very reliable.

Over the last month or so it's developed an intermittent starting problem which is becoming less intermittent.

The car opens fine but when you go to start the car it's literally dead....does not even attempt to turn over etc. Leave the car and the next time you try and start it it works absolutely fine ?

Booked it into the local VW dealer who have the car as of this morning and they can't find any fault codes or get it to do it again.

When I tried starting the car this morning at the first attempt it wouldn't start so I got out locked the car and then unlocked it and tried again. Started second time around no problem. Doesn't just happen on cold starts though....it happened to my wife a couple of days ago when she had stopped for 15 mins.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this ? Failing that can anyone recommend any VW specialist in London or Bucks/Herts/Essex that know these cars well ? I have a feeling I'll be getting a call from Alan Day tomorrow morning saying they still can't find a fault.

is it automatic?,

I have had same symptoms with a diferent marque of car but the neutral position sensor was faulty & did exactly this, the main dealer couldnt find a problem as no codes were stored...... wasnt untill i went spastic at it one day an rocked it back an fourth while in park just before turning the key it sprang into life...... :grin:

Yes it's DSG.Hmmm....that's interesting thanks. I'll suggest it.

It's a nightmare as my wife uses the car a lot for ferrying our two small children around. Being left stranded with two nippers is less than ideal.

I found the exact same thing too frustrating especially as i'd had the car a matter of months, & yet like you say it was intermittent & then just became almost a regular occourence, I'm not up to speed on how all the new golfs work but an auto dsg or not must have this sensor still in some guise, Good luck dude!!

Turns out it was a loose earth connection on the starter motor. You'd think a main dealer would check that straight away when you report starting problems! But no they took 48 hours to find it.
