Absolutely stumped....
« on: 31 July 2012, 18:55 »
Hi all, just wanting some advice really. After getting back from holiday I went for a quick blast down the road and I could hear a rubbing noise, so I turned back and went home. Had a look at the N/S/F wheel and it looked like a spring/shocker had Broken. So i did what any VW enthusiast would do... Ordered a set of coilovers  fitted them over the weekend and I've had to adjust the N/S\F wheel a lot more that the other to make it level. What else could cause the suspension to collapse??? It's a 88 16V if that's any help. Cheers Jordan

Are you setting up on 100% level ground? Try not to guess the answer! :lipsrsealed:
And did you check the top mounts?

May not of been 100% level lol, could that affect it to cause 40MM difference? Could try the top mounts. Sure I read some where G60 mounts are a lot better than original.

Ideally the car wants setting up on a Flat Plate, or, at a Vehicle suspension geometry specialist, most towns have something, you may need to do some asking around locally, to see who's best for the job... sounds daunting and expensive, but its actually not, and well worth every penny
To be in with a fighting chance, you need to optimise what you already have, ie, make sure all other components are at their best, any worn suspension parts should be changed before, the car is set up, and yes G60 top mounts are a good place to start, as well as having all 4 tyres with uniform wear...
Setting up properly, will extend the life of the tyres, and make the car more rewarding to drive

Thanks for all your help Thom! Perhaps it's an excuse to do a complete restoration  change all the bushes maybe even upgrade the engine so no need for the lead aditive! Good time to start a build thread.

Do people still use that stuff?  :lipsrsealed:

Aha! Yes indeed, tbh I'm probably the only one left with a leaded mk2! Lol

I'm sure all mk2's were designed to run on unleaded  :undecided:

Topmounts - mk3 mounts with the mk3 securing nut and mk3 bearing (fronts)  mk2 or mk3 rears.

I now bin the helper spring on the coilover. Those can cause problems when trying to level it by the coilover threads.

They run on either, They just prefer a decent octane rating, this includes MK1s.  Mine has never run on any form of additives.  Just slightly tweaked timing and 98 RON.  These engines don't suffer from valve seat recession as far as I am aware.

Definitely get the tracking and camber done, the difference when i first put my coilovers on and drove it, then after tracking it felt like a different car!
