Alternator
« on: 29 July 2012, 22:47 »
Hi all

I popped out to tesco tonight and the car wouldn't start on my way home so needed to call the AA.  Turns out the alternator is buggered.  Would it be safe to assume a 2nd hand one would do the job (assuming it worked when moved from the car) or should I get something new?  It's a 1990 8v GTI

Thanks

Pedro

They are 55A. I would get an audi 80 90A. Way better

Looks good.  I presume this is just a straight swap over (an idiot like me can do) with no comparability issues?

Thanks for the help

Why not get yours refurbished? Cost about £40. Don't over tighten the belt afterwards.

This.. 90amp FTW!

Wouldn't it be a problem that it takes a serpentine belt?

Swap the pulleys over.  I think many alternators are the same fit but some have different pulleys dependant on engine or spec due to power steering or other additional ancillaries. I've know people to fit ones from Passats, T25 vans etc

I'm running a 90a from a T25 van in my mk1.

I think all mk2 diesels are 90a and fit yours (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

A tad late but yes the pulleys can be swapped and is a direct fitment.

I fitted an audi 100 alternator but not 100% sure if they are all the same. Double check the one on ebay first obviously

I used to rewind genorators and motors but just buy the 90A ones from audi's. Always worth fitting a new voltage regulator on there also. All the electrics work far better now.
