Oh this is SO important. Get your water pump replaced. VW don't class it as a serviceable part, but it is. You need the later model with metal propeller.

The new VW one is modified yet still runs a plastic impellor the idea is that it will shear off if it seizes.

I'm in a similar predicament myself, had the car for 7 years, bought it when it was 3 years old with 7k miles on the clock & serviced religiously at supplying VW dealer since new.

I've just booked it in again for a major service, 4k miles since last service 12 months ago. I also get the cambelt done by VW & ask them to change the waterpump every time - It's had 2 cambelt changes in my ownership.

VW have menu pricing for service & service related work for all VW's between 3-10 years old & this year they applied that to my car even though it was over 10 years old. Minor service is about £130 & major service about £260. Cam belt change iirc is about £340.

To be honest, I rang around a couple of VW specialists & the difference in price was negligible, so I opted (rightly or wrongly...) to carry on having it serviced at VW & get the stamp in the book. I don't know if it will add any value when I come to sell but thats the choice you make...

If your car has got a full VW service history from the supplying dealer, I would imagine its very much like mine in that it has been well looked after. Chances are that you might not end up with an unexpected bill, but I guess that depends on the dealership...

seized metal water pumps are not pretty... the last RS I worked on tore the cam belt in half and bent all 8 valves due to this lol

They are made from a better composite now which is less likely to break

So I'll demand a new waterpump which means the plastic internals - which is ok?  The metal one seems unnecessary.  So belt and waterpump without service or MOT could be up to £500.  Wow!

I'm lucky that I've got a mate who does all my work, cost me £50 labour for cambelt and water pump change

Opposite way around, you need the pumo with metal propeller not plasdtic.  Unless it's suddenly changed?  the plsatic ones always go at some point, metal ones are supposed to last an incredibly long time.

Either way, ask for an updated water pump.  Mine blew a couple of years ago when it had less miles on than yours, so you're taking a chance not having it done.

The metal version is a bad idea, the VW one is modified now and much better even if it is still plastic, the metal ones are a bad idea as they will cause major damage if the seize or get stuck.

Nobody I know in the trade recommends the metal pump these days.

+1 VW dont do the metal impeller any more. The new VW waterpump is a better quality plastic so should last alot longer.

Thanks to all.  I will definitely ask for a new and updated waterpump.  I've got a funny feeling that if I ask about whether the inside blades are plastic or metal, I'll get a "baffled" look from the staff.  It will probably be the strong plastic anyway.
