Going to VW themselves? (.") £££ (".)
« on: 25 July 2012, 16:54 »
'00-reg 1.8T AUM 35k

My mk4 is due a service but the thing is the previous owners took it to the same VW dealership it was bought from, every single year.  With the exception of tyres, nobody else has touched it for the last 12 years and it would be nice to keep the fwvsh up to scratch.  Frequently around 700 miles between services.

Mileage is so low it never had the belt done, at this age I would rather get it done by them, but a few years ago I took a mk4 gti 20v non-turbo to VW and paid £300 for a flaming oil change!  Oh as a bonus they gave me a list of faults totaling £1700 which I didn't opt to do.  I'm scared of getting shafted and spending on staff with clipboards and pencils instead of spending what I need.

I have a VW down the road from me, but if I go to the other VW who looked after it since new, and say I'm the new owner I need a major service, will they offer me incentives?  Or am I better off going to the one down my road?

I've had mk2 for 11 years and always did servicing myself, does anyone thing I'm being silly spending on VW for such an old car?  I have no idea on prices as the website isn't specific enough.  Thanks in advance

h.

Haha people never believe me!  I bought it 6 months ago with 29k, now it has 35k.  Everything is documented by this one vw dealership and belt/maj service is due next (now).

Any comments on taking it to vw?  Incentives for them to keep me?

Maybe I could pay 350-400 for the belt change and buy servicing parts from them to do myself.  Oh actually this same vw garage always do the MOT and that's due pretty soon.  So I imagine a full service inc timing belt and MOT would be approaching a grand!  I don't need bills like this right now

Get than belt replaced immediately, anywhere to be quite honest. If that lets go you'll have a lovely 35k paperweight

My '99 has 44k on it. Assuming 12k a year average mileage mines got less than yours. So not particularly shocked

Seriously though, VW do discounts for old cars like yours. Although personally I'd just go to a VW specialist. Bottom line is an early mk4 is worth very little, even with low miles. A good service history will get you the same price as a full VW one.

Cheers Bob, I think I'll ask that vw how much and what incentives they can offer me, and at a minimum I'll fork out to get the belt done and service/MOT it elsewhere.  These main dealers take the mickey mouse!

Belt is due on age (every 4 yrs) and not mileage, it is well overdue and I would not be using anymore until it is replaced, also get the water pump replaced at the same time.

As for keeping the history, does it really matter not really going to add much to its value.

Just use a specialist they will be cheaper than VW.

Ahh tell me about it, VW are awful!

My Golf had a FWVSH when I got her, 24k on the clock, back in 2008. I serviced it myself to save money. lot to be said for keeping the SH up though. VW specialist is the way to go. Awesome GTI replaced mine for £300.

Oh this is SO important. Get your water pump replaced. VW don't class it as a serviceable part, but it is. You need the later model with metal propeller.
