Can I run the cable next to power cables without problem?

To reduce "noise" I would opt for a shielded cat5e or cat6 cable.

Make sure you earth any shielded cable you use or it will have the opposite effect and amplify the noise .

This may seem like a daft question but is there an earthing wire running through cat 5? Or are you earthing the faceplate

I would run Cat5e everywhere if you have the chance. Dedicated cables are always going to be better.

I would probably run 2 cat5e or cat6 (for future proofing) to each room with a twin socket faceplate, with all the cables terminating in a central place, like a cupboard under the stairs, with plugs on the ends of the cables. Then have a 8/16 port Gigabit switch in there along with your internet router (not all routers run at Gigabit and a dedicated switch will have more ports).

Why run 2 cables to each room?
Chances are that you may have a laptop that can use wifi but also consider your Sky/Virgin box, Xbox/PS3 and you may want a network printer in a room or you may even chose to run your landline phones over the cat5e/6 cables.

In your central place you could also put a NAS device for backup too.

I have run two cables to master bedroom (pc/Xbox) and one to each other room. That way I only have 4 going to router. I can get switch in any room I may want more connections, but don't think that will be an issue.

All in all it's only cost me about 30 quid. I managed to get 90ft of cable for nothing

£30 is cheaper than an 'elegant' alternative...

You'd need two of these at a minimum
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

I'd assume so if they are a Solwise product, but check with Solwise before buying anything.

personally i wouldnt bother, esp with power link now available. uses your existing power network to send the data required to anywhere in your house. :nerd:

THIS....

I'm using Comtrend Powerline adapters throughout the house, even to the man shed 30 meters away from the house.  No issues at all.  :nerd:

Rather than start a new thread ill ask my question here

I currently have my wireless router in the dining room as it gives me the best coverage for the house.  From that in have some TP homeplugs which i have one in the living room behind my tv.

As my collection of items has grown that requires / can be connected im looking for a solution so i can have everything connected without having to swap wires etc.

I got my Sky box, xbox and blue ray player.  At some point ill add a new tv which will probably require another connection.

My question is can i buy a router, plug it into the homeplug behind my tv and then use it to connect all the devices to the internet??

Moving the router is not an option as the master socket is in my bedroom at the back of the house.

Hope that makes sense  :undecided:
