19s or 20s
« on: 24 July 2012, 09:37 »
I am in the process of looking for new wheels for my GTi. Would you recommend 19inch or 20inch. Thinking of getting OZ Ultras or ADV trackspec wheels. 20s weigh about 10kg less than the stock 18s.

Neither, 18"s for a good balance of looks and ride comfort/handling/tyre cost

agree. 19s and 20s would cost a fortune, not to mention the possible change in the car's riding - i suggest you try them out before buying, i drive on 18s and they already give me a rough ride, i can't imagine the 19s or 20s being any smoother.
GTI MKVI, 5dr DSG, Candy White, Bi-Xenon, ACC, 18" Monza shadow, RCD510 w/Dynaudio, Sunroof, w/2 baby seats... and she's a beauty.

There is only a small difference in ride between 18s and 19s...slightly harsher on the 19s especially round town, but easliy tamed using ACC...the trade off being noticably sharper turn-in.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Depends what you are comparing them to, cost wise.
I think most 19s (possibly 20s...but personally I think they'd look silly) cost less than a set of genuine Monza Shadows...so wheels and tyres together will be similar to buying OEM.

I cant comment on the wheels you are after but having had ED30 and MK6 on 18's and now the ED35 on 19's both sizes work really well on the cars. The 18's are a good compromise of looks, cost, ride and handling however now I have the 19's these have transformed the steering, with much crisper turn in and the car feels much more planted. Ride does suffer over poor surfaces but only slightly.  So either go for a good all round compromise or treat your GTI and yourself so that you have a really communicative front end and enjoy the car even more.
Current: GTI Edition 35 Candy White 5dr DSG 19" Glendale, RCD510+DAB, Dynaudio, Storage Pack, Parking Sensors

Gone: Edition 35, GTI Mk6, Edition 30, GTI Mk4, GTI Mk3, GTI Mk2 and my favourite the UR quattro
For those that dont know DSG is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox

thanks for the feedback. I have BBS CK 19s on the car at the moment. The ride is very nice. The 20inch OZ wheels weigh lighter than the stock 18s and look very nice. Its a tough choice.

19's here

20's would be pushing it a bit too far IMHO

I had 19" on my old BMW and I found the ride fairly harsh ESP with the pot holed roads in this country.
The problem I had with mine was that due to the shallow tyre wall they split on the inside wall which was a nightmare to find as it only lost air under hard cornering. Also it made the car a bit more twitcher than I liked  over the unexpected imperfections in the road.

I think 20" would be pushing it. 19" might be ok as the gti suspension is a bit more forgiving.
