What is this ?
« on: 22 July 2012, 18:13 »
In the picture below is a metal rod that is covered in oil (as the green arrow shows) It is behind the engine on the back next to the fire wall. The turbo is just off the left hand side of the picture out of sight.

Where is the oil likely to of come from? should it be there? The oil did seem fresh.

Thanks

Sorry, I think the turbo is to the right hand side off the picture, as I turned the picture round

hard to see from there mate, upload a few more pics, oil is normally from boost leaks  and could be where your power has gone
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

Yeh that is what I thought, I could not find any pipe around there though. I am having my brake fluid changed today, so I will ask the mechanic to have a look. I will try and get some more pictures later on, but it is a bit difficult because of the place where it is on the back of the block.

Thanks

I get the rough idea of where it is, but cant think of anything there that would leak boost, didnt you fit a TIP recently? have you checked that ?

Yes I had a tip fitted, I don't think the tip is the problem, but will ask the mechanic if he can see a leak there. The pipe or metal bar (whatever it is) is kind of inside the back of the block a bit. There is also oil over the heat shield that covers the pipe that connects to the pancake pipe from the charge pipe.

Could it be coming from the block?

There is black soot on top of the pipe/heat shield from pancake to charge pipe. I got a feeling the exhaust manifold seal could of gone, or worse has a crack in it  :undecided: Is that a possibility at all?

It could be, but if it was leaking that much you would have no oil in the sump, because it would really have to gush out of the block to cover the pipe.
where the charge pipe meets the tube for the pancake is a very common area for boost leaks, mine was sorted by someone by joining 2 Jubilees together.

As with any leak, wipe it down so the surrounding area is clean and then you can get a better idea of the source (I use gunk to get rid of stubborn stuff like that) << not an advert for Gunk

It could have but I would have thought you would get a code for that, the problem is you dont know how much of this stuff was there 'before' you experienced any issues, wipe it all down as best you can and then see where the source is
