mkII head gasket???

if any one can help me that would be great. iv taken the head off of my golf as it was suspect head gasket, the car had started to be taken appart before i got it. but i cant see the gasket gone any where so could it be the mechanical seal on the water pump?? theres oil in the cooling syatem and water in the oil.

That ll be oil cooler.
Might as well do some head work while it's off though like stem seals.
