What coolant for 16V GTI?
« on: 16 July 2012, 11:29 »
I need to top up the coolant in my car but don't know what colour I need to use. How do I find this out?

Previously I used the Prestone Antifreeze and Coolant which is for all makes and models - regardless of colour but I was just hunting around to find a better deal.

Thanks in advance.

i used the G12++ from tps. Its ment to stop the inside of the engine from rusting. Best to flush it out totaly and get 2x of G12++, which come in 1.5l and top rest with water.
To flush it make sure cars cool and loosen the bottom rad pipe and drain it out. If you want to replace your coolant bottle as itl be looking sorry for its a$$. You can get it from vwspares.co.uk (i think)

Is there any difference between all of the different coolants?

For example this is the one I'm currently using: http://prestone.com/products/antifreeze_coolant/product_list#product-378

Am I therefore okay to continue using this?

G12 does NOT supercede G11 automatically, G11 and G12 MUST NOT be mixed.
This is do to G11 and G12 being chemically incompatible and it may flocculate.

You are however allright to use G12+ or G12++ (which is the only one you can get from VW now) with either G11 or G12.

So as long as the stuff you buy is G12+ or ++ spec you can use it in your Golf (even more so if you fully change coolant and not just top up).

Personally I only use red anticoolant to G12++ spec as this is way more friendly with your alu cylinder head ;)
