mk3 8v clutch cable
« on: 14 July 2012, 21:55 »
Right guys, I needed to change my clutch cable as the old one looked like it was the original and had begun fraying.  But having been and got a new cable, stripping the old one out...getting it on the pedal...the grommet in the bulkhead back in...why does the pedal not seem to want to adjust after a fair bit of pumping?  Haynes said keep the locking straps in place and pump the pedal while someone pulls the inner cable?

then refit the rest? and pre-tension some more?  does the rubber from the fitting kit sit under the clutch arm or above?  Mine didnt have one on  :lipsrsealed: I'm talking about the one that comes with the gold clamps for the nipple.

Rubber bit sits under the clutch arm. I think you need one of these - probably a quid or 2 from the dealers or get one from a scrappy.

Assemble, replace grommet etc. Make sure both ends are securely/properly connected.

Then undo the white plastic clamp from the cable and your pedal should find the right level in a few pumps.

Mine was on the floor with the clamp on but in the right place first pump when I took it off.

Once it is fitted you remove the white clip and it will self adjust.

Cheers bandit, I did get the kit from GSF and its got that bung/float with it, and its in place.  Its on the clutch pedal and also in situ on the arm.  Quick query tho, did you use the nearer or further peg on the clutch pedal?  one is further into the cabin?  Its clearly been sat on the shorter one previously  :undecided:

and to clarify...ignore the Haynes manual, basically fit on the pedal...fit in the clutch arm and then remove the locking straps and pump the foot like a barsteward?

Didn't see a "further" peg on the clutch pedal. The one I used was the one that lined up with the hole in the bulkhead as I looked through it. It all seemed to line up nicely with the boss on the cable outer. It took me a few goes - but there was definitely a feeling of it being right when it was all lined up.

You shouldn't need to pump the pedal like a barsteward. It should come in first or second time...  :undecided:

auto adjuster cable needs resetting, had the same after replacing the metal clip that secures cable to clutch lever with a new one (old one broke and clutch cable slipped out -clutch pedal fully to the floor).
if i remember corretly you need to push down 3 times to set it correctly, then press clutch pedal and it should work after 1-2 times.

there is no need to pump at pedal as it's nothing hydraulic that you could bleed.

Did you remove the white clamp/clip before the cable was in place?

If so, you need to reset the cable as itavaltalainen says.

If his instructions don't work then you will need to do it the hard way. There is a guide here:

I found the tricky bit was the clips in the second picture.

Well if by white clamp you mean the plastic locking straps then no. Didn't remove them.

But what am I pulling three times?  Am I pulling the inner cable or the large cupped end?  The cable is brand new and it was too long to begin with. I would have expected it to auto tighten not loosen??

We fitted the clip on to the clutch pedal then fitted the grommet and the lastly offered the nipple and retaining plates with the float under the clutch arm but it was just too slack. We left the plastic white locking straps on lifting the pedal and that gave an extra inch or so under the clutch plate and even pulling down on the locking strapped area it achieved nada.

I presume itavaltienen means pull the strapped area done whilst keeping the inner cable still? Thus making the in er spring pull the plastic sleeved area further down the cable?

And cheers bandit for the link to the other but funk that!!!! That looks a ball ache

LOL - yes it was a ball ache   I remember now that I had to follow the guide because I had the opposite problem. The cable had over adjusted and engaged the clutch. I could sit with the engine running and select the gears without pressing the pedal.

I think he means grab the part the white strap is on and push it down (towards the floor), let go and repeat a few times.

TBH I am beginning to wonder if you have the wrong cable now though. It should just work.

I meant after installing the cable, replacing rubber and metal clip on the clutch lever (the one on the gearbox) you need to push this down fully 3 times, then press the cluch pedal for a number of times.

Saying it's too long, europarts would not have given you a LHD cable would they? Those are longer than RHD ones.
