Passed MOT :) but need new tyres any advice?
« on: 17 June 2005, 22:23 »
Good news ever today, my little beut, passed her MOT, but i need to replace my 2 front tyres!

Bad news, i have Goodyear Eagle F1's - 215/40zr 16 82w  -  GS-D2 - and they are close too £100 each :(

Are they worth it, or is there an alternative or discounts anyware?

I found this list on blackcircles.com, but not sure what's what? -

Nexen N 3000 (Extra Load) (Special Offer) 215/40 R16 W   - £68.40
Falken ZE 512 215/40 R16 W   - £70.18
Kumho Ecsta 712 215/40 R16 W   - £76.02
Marangoni Linea 215/40 R16 W   - £91.97
Toyo Proxes T1-S (Reinforced) 215/40 R16 W   - £93.78
Toyo Proxes T1-R (Reinforced) 215/40 R16 W   - £93.78
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD2 215/40 R16 Z   - £94.98
Dunlop SP2040 E 215/40 R16 W    - £100
Pirelli Pzero Nero 215/40 R16 W   - £100
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 215/40 R16 W  - £100

Any advice would be most apprciated!

Thanks

Saw one of the high performance forum threads a while ago with a couple of 911 drivers extoling the virtues of the Kumhos.  Very good value, apparently.  Only used their 4x4 offerings in the past (which were very good) but not used the fast road stuff.

Eagles are what I have on.  Top stuff.

I used to have michelin pilot sport on mine, which are suppose to be better than the Eagle F1's but then changed to the F1's as it was a cheaper longer lasting tyre and i thought they were better. To be honest mate id stick with the F1's your not going to be saying yourself much cash. Just put the old F1s on the front and the new ones on the rear.. May not be the best idea but fronts always wear quicker.. Always nice to have 4 boots the same!

Cheers

Toyo Proxes!! I put them on mine and they are awesome! Look cool too. Must admit i had never had 'real' tyres before.  I have the S ones, coming up for a change though so going to put the R on, apparently about 25% better. Can't wait to get cornering on them little bad boys! Mind you £170 for 2 tyres is a bit harsh! Bring back my cavalier and its £20 remoulds.... well.... don't actually...

Goodyear Eagle are brilliant.

Toyo Proxes are also very good, not the best in slightly damp conditions.

I am using Avon ZV3 and I've got to say they are excellent.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that Continentals are pretty good and cheap (35 a tyre).

I spent last weekend but one throwing my (other) car (the MG) through every corner in Switzerland and never really lost traction. Got some amazing tyre squeals and only had one corner where the back end of the car stepped out perfectly. Other than that the tyres kept gripping like i've never felt.

tyres... hmm really depends on what you have in your wallet mate tbh, ive had alsorts through all of my many dubs over the years, currently running toyo rpoxies on the mk4 gti and the mk2, grip like fook in the dry, as mentioned earlier can be dicey in the damp conditions but seem ok when fully wet conditions, the wear rate isnt good, well not as good as pirrelis ive had in the past, just my bit....

go with what you can afford, unless you drive your car hard your not really gonna know the difference between a £40 tyre and a £100 one..
