electric windows not working

Bit of a problem with the Windows on the golf they won't go up or down on either of the switches , they only way is to either lock the car and hold it to shut , or open the car and hold it to open. I thought this was a relay myself but could be wrong was also told the reverse light fuse has something to do with it  . anyone any ideas or answers even better?  Also electric mirrors don't work would this be part of the same problem?

the sunroof works on the switch, when I go to open or close it will only lift one side up or down, has a cable or bar broke to cause this? I don't want to take it off because of our lovely Irish weather

For the windows and mirrors check the wiring inside the rubber grommet that runs from the pillar to the door as these tend to snap pretty easily.

had a look nothing broke at all its strange since both sides dont work on the switch but when you lock / open it with the key it works
