Steering Gaitor Replacement

Hi guys

More problems.. See image below i am trying to undo the nut that holds the ball joint onto the arm, but it dont won't budge. Its got a locking nut then i am assuming u spin the ball joint round to remove this. The lockin nut i believe has to be turned clockwise to release the ball joint. I am having to remove this to slide over the gaitor as the end is so small.



Please can someone lend a hand, becoming desprate now.. he he

You need to hold the ball joint firm on the flats in your picture (with a 14mm spanner from memory, but don't quote me).  That locking nut should undo with a good heft squeezing the two spanners together.

Squeezing together.. I thought the thread was normal so to undo the locking nut wont i have to do it up (clockwise). Its really bugging me.. Just want to get it sorted.

Any more ideals... no other way of gettting the gaitor on?

Make sure the balljoint is still attached to the hub. Use a spanner on the flats, then a spanner on the locknut, turn until you can lock the first spanner against the body of the car, then if needed, interlink another spanner on the spanner already on the locknut. This should crack the locknut free.

Well i did similar to this.. I put a spanner on the flats (guessing u mean the two flat sections on the toe end(is that right?) and then lowered the car on the jack until this spanner was held in position by the ground. THen i was using a massive adjustable spanner on the locking nut and nothing.. Was bashing it with a hammer too. Ive used WD40, Some freeze stuff my locktite, my next plan is the heat it up.. watcha recon?

Solution for this i found in the end...

Go down to see your local boys at kwikfit, they will sort u out. As they put it up on the ramp and use a F*ck off big spanner and it will come undone easy... he didnt charge me either.. so gave him a few quid for a beer.

Glad you got it sorted! Like a few simple jobs, i have found unless you have the big/correct tools it can be a job from hell! also a ramp help too :)
