Front Top Strut Nut Thread Size
« on: 07 July 2012, 21:12 »
Hi All,

Can anyone tell me the front top strut nut thread size. I'm looking to replace the interference nuts with double lock nuts.

I'm in the middle of refurbing the front suspension on the project Golf i've had for a month or so.
Started off as a resto job but so far ive gone g60 carriers and new discs and pads to suit . Teledials and adapters to replace the 14" bottle caps which no longer fit . New Wishbones, ARB drop links and wheel bearings.

I've stripped one side, seam sealed and waxoiled then rebuilt.
The other side is proving to be a b!tch, Cant get the top nut off, Ive tried all sorts of things; last resort is a nut gun before grinding the side off the nut (providing I can get in the top cap)

Cheers All

Mole grips on the suspension strut and then undo the top nut.

It wont do any damage to the piston (or whatever people call it)

size is m14x1.5 pitch

Cheers,

Springs that are fitted are progressive rate so I cant get the grips in at the top of the shaft.
Don't fancy gripping it at the bottom.
Did that on a rear shock on my old CRX (think I may have just said a dirty word on a VW forum ) and ended up fitting a new shock.

Had the same problem. If you can't get your hands on a impact gun, try an impact driver and a hammer on the nut - worked for me after I had tried pretty much everything else.

Don't go for cutting the nut if you can help it - it's hard to get in at an angle which will cut through the nut bot not damage the thread of the strut.
