Another fuel filler pipe question.
« on: 06 July 2012, 23:37 »
I bought a fuel filler pipe recently, I was told it was an oem one for a cabby.

Today I removed the old one and noticed the newer one i'm going to change it for is a lot longer, So i'm presuming this is the tin top one?, That will need to be made shorter? I've attached a pic, Which is a bit unfair really as I paid the extra bit of money so I wouldn't have to saw it in half.

Also between the body of the car and the top of the fuel filler neck, Where the 3 screws are, Is there some sort of sponge/rubber/foam piece that goes there between the body and the fuel filler neck to keep the pipe nice and snug?, As on removal there was't one there, but I think may off roted away as there is debre left.

Can I get one of these foam pieces still?, And/or could I install it with out this piece?

Thanks for your time

If you got the neck for a fair price I'd say don't worry about it.  An inconvenience having to cut down but you've got it now.

I'm not sure if there is a seal available.  The stuff you found was probably remnants of what was most likely silicone.

I would slightly key back the cr@p the neck is painted in and paint it with something decent

Clean the inner of the panel it's going to mount to, check for rust, if clear, get some fresh waxoyl on there.

Get some silicone around the filler necks lip and, well you know the rest.

Yes there is a sponge gasket that fits there.

Maybe it's the cause of a lot of necks failing, as it will absorb the water and dirt that kicks up from off the road.

It's bad enough the mud sticking up and around there too, as there is no arch liner to keep the muck out.

I give mine a wipe down and clean every now and then to keep the muck off the the filler pipe.

Mind you I have got small hands to get up there.

cheers
