Brake degreaser is actually very good for electrical stuff. It degreses well and leaves little or no residue, plus it won't rot the insulation. It is flammable though, so don't attempt to clean your armature while the alternator is spinning... LOL.
I would definitely put some new brushes in while you are at it. For the price of them and the trouble it takes, you might as well do them and then you will be good for another 80k+ miles. It would be a sod if there is only 5k miles left in the brushes right now...
