Anyone done a rectifier on an alternator?

I’ve got a spare alternator it’s only giving me 12.3V so I’m thinking about de soldiering the rectifier and stick a new one on?
Anyone done this plus what de greaser can I use to clean the stator and shaft with as it’s a bit grubby?

I've been quoted £25 +£4 postage for a rectifier so might as well just do it my self as I've been offered complete exchange for £80.00?

new bearings are worth fitting too while it's in bits
just use some spray brake degreaser on it

Yeah that was going to be my choice degreaser someone said washing up liquid but its got salt sodium in it I think?
Any trick in getting the big old nut off with out it spinning, I've tried vice, socket and allen keys my orignal one would not budge for love or money?
Looks like windy gun might work?

take the back half casing off
hold the armature in soft aliminium jaws , in a vice
then a bit of release oil or wd40 , and a long power bar

never use washing up liquid on electrical stuff

It was a mate on the phone not really into cars TBF but a whizz at other stuff so let him be

Brake degreaser is actually very good for electrical stuff. It degreses well and leaves little or no residue, plus it won't rot the insulation. It is flammable though, so don't attempt to clean your armature while the alternator is spinning... LOL.

I would definitely put some new brushes in while you are at it. For the price of them and the trouble it takes, you might as well do them and then you will be good for another 80k+ miles. It would be a sod if there is only 5k miles left in the brushes right now...

yeah I'll take a look see how worn they are TBF its a spare part so proberly only come out to get me out of a fix!
