anybody smoothed their boot themselves?
« on: 05 July 2012, 21:23 »
Getting a new boot from the breakers as I no longer want a spoiler and dont want to mess around with trying to pry it off. While it is still unfitted to the car I want to have a go at smoothing the badge recess.
I've searched google and cant find a guide, so has anyone attempted this themselves?

not sure how to even start  don't want to just pack it with filler as that doesn't sound too sturdy

Pretty sure most people cut another bit out of another boot lid and weld that in the hole where you want it smooth.

see I had that in mind but then I thought to myself nobody would go to that much effort to smooth such a small recess

is that the only way it can be done?

if you scroll down on this, it looks like they've filled it with something else and sanded it?

to do a proper job you will need to cut out the recess part of tailgate out and weld in a plate from behind, grind down your welds and a very small skim of filler over the top as over time just putting filler in the hole it will whats called sag and also start to crack over time due to slamming tailgate down, ive got to paint my tailgate as some numpty no nailed the badges on my car  and im considering doing this but bought a sharan badge instead and just going badgless instead, going to fill recess on my bonnet though as that bugs me big time my golf needs quite a few bits of paintwork doing just need this blasted rain to stop so i can make a start, might have to ask to borrow me dads garage if things dont get any better need this done before the winter comes.

They sound like very good prices!

One near me in Southampton wanted £80 JUST for painting a rear bumper, no filling, no priming, no sanding.

Perhaps I'll be coming to Suffolk one weekend

There's a couple on eBay, one silver one (dunno the paint code as its of no use to me) and one thats sprayed ford rs line green for some reason.....

Mine has the mk5 handle in, mk5 spoiler welded  on and a reversing camera where the rear wiper should be.
