quick gearbox question

 Hi, my man at the garage has said my gearbox is knackered so i need a replacment.
I no its been covered befor ebut need to act quick as i may commit to buy a Mk2 8v Gti box with a green cap, taken from an E reg car. tomorrow. 
I have a Mk1 golf cab,  is it compatable??

what year? i have a mk1 gear box  but not tested, was told it was ok by previous owner, however is has 90mm flanges

wayne gardner smokes one rothmans too many

mine is a J reg 1991,  Whats this about the flanges :shocked:, all i was told to search for was an 8v gti gearbox with a green cap on it.
Im not sure what size flanges are on mine. :undecided:

would you say its safe to say the diameter would be the same coming off an F reg mk2 gti then.  If not can i swap them over??

Btw, do u no if the gear linkage need to be altered in a any way or if i need to buy anything else to complete this job?
