I heard a while ago that Insurance companys may not cover remapped cars in the future. But for 1. they wont know anyway unless you tell them  and 2. remaps are are only a mod, just the same as lets say fitting a performance exhaust. So based on that they will be an awful lot of bankcrupt insurance companys about due to amount of modded cars on the road.

Not made illegal, just saying that when you have an MOT, then the mot tester would scan your car and check for a map... which would be too time consuming and nearly impossible as there are so many cars with different diagnostic ports etc, and some cars come from the factory with a certain map on, eg. 180 anni golf.

Not gonna happen

nope, remaps will not become illegal, there was talks about having your car chiped being an MOT failure, not sure whats happening with that, so if you simply have a piggyback remap box that plugs into your ecu and fools the car into overfueling and over boosting it will fail, however if you have a proper remap (i.e. the settings and program on the ecu reprogramed) it will not fail.

they may have a go at making it illegal on the grounds that you chould alter the emissions ect blagh blagh blagh.

btw  isnurers can tell if you've had it remaped,  if you bin it and the bill is big enough they will look and if it is done they will find it
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Given that at the moment the 'check engine light' condition of MOTs is currently on hold I think expecting them to check for a remap is a long stretch.

Obviously there's still smoke tests etc which your car may pass, but then if it's been remapped safely, by someone competent it shouldn't be blowing huge clouds of unburnt diesel out the back anyway.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I heard something on last mot refresher I went on this year about remapped car but took no notice like I always do!!! But I have APR map and can lock it out so can't read it. But saying that at work if car comes in on one of BMW or mini and we hook it up to diag machine comes up if mapped. If car within warranty we have to tell BMW they log it and don't tell customer. In future any engine problems related to map voids warranty

I think a distinction needs to be drawn between something that is illegal (against the law) and something that is an MOT failure.

In any case, for all the reasons already stated above, I can't see it even becoming an MOT failure.  And a car can fail the emissions tests whether it's mapped or not.  Most maps will not alter your fuelling duty until the car is under load anyway, and the current UK MOT tests are not carried out on a rolling road.
