« on: 03 October 2003, 14:59 »

can you help?

How do i know if a wheel bearing is knackered?

When on the motorway can hear a low pitch whinning noise , its definately not the engine coz at 80 mph when i put it in neutral the engine sound goes and steel hear whinning sounds like its from the rear wheel.

Please tell me its cheap to fix?

cheers

Jack the wheel off the ground, and try and wiggle it - just a little bit ;) - that should tell you if its going, you could try tightening it first, might last a little while longer. It's not expensive to replace - even cheaper if you do it yourself - do you have a workshop manual?
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

If its the rear bearing then it might just need tightening, garages never seem to adjust the rear bearings properly. As Adam said chock the front wheels , jack the car, and with the handbrake off try and rock the wheel.

Yeah its been pretty much explained, when rocking the wheel hold it with a hand on the top and a hand on the bottom, you should feel a slight knocking through your hands if the bearing is loose, whilst its on the stands put your ear close to the hub and spin the wheel, if its gone you'll hear it whir.

Bearings are cheap to buy but make sure you don't knacker them putting them in the discs. I always use an old outer race to drive the new ones in.
