Does not matter what you tell them it is worth as they will only pay bottom book price. I got £1200 for mine in 2010. Agreed valuation is the way forward nowadays.

i'm paying close to a £1000 in insurance as have just two years driving experience in the UK and almost 20 years driving experience abroad, but the damn insurance companies treat me like a new driver..I got cheaper insurance on my international licence, but as soon as I switched to the UK licence the companies treated me like a new driver...this is horrible...and expensive as hell..now I am up for renewal and it will probably go up again, as they justified increasing the premium last year by saying they are increasing it for everyone...I wish I could find a normal car insurance company..it is cheaper to buy a LHD vehicle and insure it abroad and be a much higher risk driver in the UK than to buy a car here and insure it...how that makes the road safer for everyone else I don't know..
would just like to find decent insurance company that would look objectively at everything...how unfair..:(

HIC do a good scheme for agreed valuation and is the only way to get back a reasonable sum of money without ball ache
Insurers will look at book value only, Mk3 golfs don't book.
£300 is basically scrap value, hence the valuation.
Not worth saying your car is worth more than this or having full comp unless it is low mile and mint.
If you have a pristine project car, you will not be using run of the mill insurance cover as all your turbo bits and nice paint job will be declared and valued accordingly to ensure you have cover.

I have 20 years driving experience and 10 years ncb, even a 1.0l nudges £400 for me
That's what living near Croydon does for you

I use Adrian Flux specialist insurance, I have declared everything, VR engine conversion, leathers, lights, wheels etc etc and agreed a value of £2000, my premium came back £80 cheaper over the year than the year before, which was Zurich insurance on a standard GTi 8v. Bonus
