Its the idle screw it meters the amount of air in the throttle body.
If it was running fine before you might have a new air leak somewhere and reducing the idle screw all the way in, kind of compensates for the air leak you might have.
You should start looking for the leak using start spray.

hhhmmm

thanx for reply, there are 3 pipes from the air filter, 2 of them to the back of the throttle and the last one near the idle scrow,,

do u have a clear diagram for it.

it is mk2 16v.

thanx

Dont worry about the vac pipes unless they have come off the rubber elbow as long as they are all connected some way they don't need to be hooked into componets they are more to do with really cold countries like Canada they act like cold sensors feed to the metering head or throttle body!
I have no diagrams someone might have pictures to show you where they should be.

No prblems mate!
Sometimes the Throttle screw itself gets loose and causes idle problems at that point you change the screw for a new one but check if it struggles to hold idle at cold start, but in Syria that should not be an issue really LOL!
