Had a similar issue with the wife's 8V - minus the core plug issue....

Stuck on a Brand New Bottle & Blue Cap - All Sorted...

Seems the "Round Coolant Bottles & Caps" Have an issue and need replacing every now ant then....

Pre 88 models with the "Un-pretty Square Bottles" Last Forever and dont need replacing...

One Mod - VW Cocked up on with MK2's...

Thats right Ken it seems to be these round coolant tanks.

We couldn't get enough swing on the hammer so engine out.
Once an engine is out its always worth tidying up eveything so started out with the plugs now its...

Paint / underseal bay area.
Wrap the loom
Fit new bushings and gaskets
Clean out all lights (Thom gave me a good tip)
powder coat the cross member etc...
Change gearbox flange seals

What turned out to be a couple hours is now well into a few days work.

Yeah i remember changing the Big Square coolant tank on my 88 16v ,
Put 1 of those small round ones on and it kept overheating an bubbling all over the top,
Had 2 put the big 1 back on and it was fine then,,

When was the water pump last changed?
Heater matrix could be a sign its on its way out due to blockages?

Engine had a top end rebuild 2 years ago and water pump is about 1000 miles new.

I've always had this over pressurising issue and I replaced the gasket as it was fairly easy.

Heater matrix has always blown nice and hot and doesnt leak. I did suspect this at first but it works so can't see the point to replace it. + it looks like another chore so don't know if I should replace it! :undecided:

back of the block has been painted now btw. Including chassis legs  :evil:

Also changed the gearbox flange seals and noticed the tapered washer is broken. Lots of work!
