If you have a SAI there is a ribbed hose that runs into the airbox, you put an adapter on the end of it that connects to that piece on the CAI
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

for summer safe (not that were having much of a summer) for winter ide proberbly move it up. tbh in winter i would  have mine routed up near the top of the bonnet just to be safe (i know its not sucking in the coldest air, but hey ho. could always get a cold air feed.)

use the small filter???

Sorry, wires crossed if your running the SAI set up (pipe on the side of the airbox) the you use the adaptor (no 1) and small piece of pipe (no 2)to connect to the induction pipe (no 3 is the outlet).

You only use the filter if the pipe has not got a outlet.
