Coilovers???
« on: 27 June 2012, 18:35 »
I'm looking to buy some coilovers in the near future, i've been looking on ebay and seen them jom ones, which are pretty cheap, just wondered if anyone had any views on them?? also it says you can lower them to 85mm, i thought you could get coilys to about 100mm? or does it depend on make/brand etc? just wanted some views?? cheers

I took delivery of my new jom coilies today, I have to say, the build quality has improved remarkably since the last set I had that lasted me 18months an a friend 12months before that, thy paint/powder coat to the springs is thicker, the galvanising on the shock seems to be of a higher quality, threads are finished cleanly (previous set looked a touch ragged) the adjusters themselves have increased in thickness an have a staggered size locker nut, the shock legs are also noticeably thicker! I was surprised by this an I will confirm with a vernier when I fit them Saturday, I also had a sh!te trashy ride on the old set when wound to the bottom, I had the bumps tops cut down when I fitted them, but removed them completely a few weeks ago and wished I'd done it sooner, much smoother less harsh crashy ride, like I say this is my second set, I was very happy with them, and I'm sure I will be again this time

A friend had a set, blew both front shocks in less than a month, had replacements sent out, 3 months later had a rear shock go, there are lots of mixed reviews out there but personally I found his ride was worse than mine on the Jom's and I was lower an my second hand ones outlasted his brand new FK ones an I do 4x the mileage he does... It's a minefield with the cheaper stuff no arguments there at all, but I want something that will last me at least untill the warrantee runs out, last thing I want to be doing is exchanging warrantee shocks when there are for more important things to be doing, however I do read that its 6 of one half a dozen of the other, where some have had no problems with FK streets but problems with jom.. I was just saying that I was surprised by the improvements to the product over the earlier offerings, an I paid 70 less than the FK streets, have a friend who has a local car shop an got them through his suppliers

I do my testing down the notorious M62 between warrington and manchester.... ive found the fk's to outdo the joms i had (both on a vr).... Maybe the joms just cant cope with the extra vr weight so i may have a biased opinion?

You see I handnt thort about the weight difference, as both Mine and the other golf I was talking about where 16v, i do bump ridden an pothole infested A and B roads, an average between 300 and 400 mile a week, I'd like nothing more than to run good quality coilovers but I just don't have that sort of cash available ever, so I have the cheapie jobs, wind em flat to the floor cos if it's gonna handle pants cos of the cheap coilies might aswell be on its arse an handle crap at least it looks half decent an if they ousts their warrantee they done well lmao... Dubbing on a shoestring budget... Can't be a snob lmao

yeah, ive been looking at second hand coilys, but it's always a big risk buying second hand, i guess its luck and whether you pick up some good ones.. so on the joms, if you take the helper out, im guessing that you can lower them more? yeah i'll have a look on the stickys, cheers..
