Normally hall sender (distributer based problem) I think... Check the wiring from front of dizzy to see if any have broke as these get brittle over the years I had same problem all down to this

Try searching on limp mode - you should get more hits. The ECU has detected a fault that has made it put a limit at 5,000 rpm.

If you (or a mate) have a code reader it should point you in the right direction. (Stewy is right but there are a few other things it could be too).

Is your engine management light on?

I just sorted this on mine! Is it had a timing belt recently? As sometimes the distributor cam can become out of sync if not refitted properly. If not it will be a hall sensor issue which is located on the side of the distributor. But like said above you really need to get a code reader on which will point you more or less in the right direction.

Check and adjust the cam timing, it is in safe mode at the minute.

its not in safe mode coz some times it revs up to 6k but other times it only goes to 4500 so im goin to have a look at the wiring you guys said about, i did a trip to the Lake District in it since i was on here last 1350miles, the good run has cleared a lot of problems (i think it was only used for short trips by the last owner) but the limiter problem is coming and going !!
