I picked my mk3 up for £300, but had no MOT. Took a leap of faith as I didn't actually see it before I bought it. Needed a sill welding, and two tyres to get through. A mate with a MIG later, and a couple of part worns, and I had a pretty good nick and solid based car for only £20 more than your budget.
