Bulb change - 1999 mk4 Gti turbo
« on: 22 June 2012, 22:52 »
Hi, probably a silly question but only just got my mk4 and tonight the passenger side main beam bulb has gone, I need to have this fixed in the morning before using the car for a round trip to kent tomorrow and coming back in the dark. So do I just need to unclamp and lift out the battery to get access to the bulbs? Its dark now so only had a brief look tonight...thanks

pass side a peice of urine yes, take out the battery (depending on how big your hands are i can do both with out taking anything apart) theres two or so screws on the top which you undo and take the trim out thats behind your head light, pop the cover off, then theres a little metal clip i belive, undo that replace bulb and do reverse.

the drivers sides harder cause less room, some people have said they have to take the bumper off and the light out to be able to do it.

Thanks mate - lucky its the passenger side then!
Just wanted to make sure there were no other complications - except disconnecting battery and losing all my radio settings

VW were kinda clever about that, 99 times out of 100 you wont lose your radio settings! ;)

Unless you have an aftermarket head unit

Hey well I know this goes back a few weeks but the bulb change was not a peice of urine....basically I got the bulb out easy but getting the little metel clip/spring back was not happening, I had to leave for a wedding in Kent in 1 hour and this bleeeeeedin thing would not go back, dads neighbour bailed me out, removed battery and surroundings to find the bracket bent!! Straightened that out carefully then we were away! Good job there were none of her majestys boys sitting on the A2 that afternoon...

Just had new middle box (£76) and rear box (£107), sounds lovely now after having an annoying rasp, and the last remaining heat guard removed as that rattled slightly, it clicked onto 152,000 miles this afternoon and I am loving the MK4 turbo, most fun I have had in ages (better not let the gf hear me say that)

Stephen!
