Whats this for?

Hi, while fitting parts on my car today i came across a wire that comes from above the oil filter housing and then loops to the starter motor.




The wires have been rubbing and the covers broken so im going to have to do a repair with some heat shrink and find somewhere to put it.

So does anyone know what this wire powers?

And secondly how should it be routed to not rub like mine has

from what i can see in the pic it looks like its coming from down near where the dipstick comes from so could be your oil level sensor maybe?

Crank shaft postion sensor mine is almost in the same place

Damn i better repair this properly then. do either of you have photos of how it should look correctly routed.

Mine runs the other side of oil filter

If the cable is damaged already the chances are you'll be replacing it sooner rather than later. Bloody things!

Perfect! spotted the same wire on mine at the weekend, all dry and crispy with insulation missing, I wonder if this could go some way towards my running issues

Sounds like there are multiple poor running issues on the mk3. Mine looks like the outer covering has cracked in places so the two wires could be connecting with each other. For mine i will just repair it as only one section felt brittle and then properly cover it to stop it rubbing
