mk2 vr6 query
« on: 19 June 2012, 10:09 »
i was just wanting to gather some information from a few people that might of done a mk2 vr6 or have a bit more knowledge than me on this conversion.

my main question was the front engine mount, how many people run a standard front engine mount how useable is this and any dangers of running this knowing the vr6 is a lot more weight than an 8 or 16v

Best advice I can give is either use Corrado VR6 front crossmember (with corrado engine mount), which can be difficult to source, or use the existing mk2 golf crossmember with a specially made mk2golf/vr6 solid engine mount. You can buy them occasionally on ebay or from a member on mk2vr6.com

I don't think a semi will give the same results

I wouldn't run anything less than a standard vr6 front engine mount. For the conversion I used corrado vr6 subframe, front cross member & rad mount, everything just bolts straight up it's easier than easy. There is always a corrado vr6 being broken on ebay.

For the front engine mount on my mk2vr6 I started with a mk3 vr6 front mount. I bought a large polyeurethene chopping board and used a circle cutter to cut out discs of the chopping board. (you can also use hockey pucks) I took the mount apart, cut 2 x slices of about 15mm from the original rubber which were used at the top and bottom of the new mount. Filled the space in between with the polyeurethene discs to required height.

I haven't had any problems having run the car for 15k+ over two years. It's stiffer than standard and there is no cabin vibration having used two slices of the original rubber. I did the same thing to the rear engine mount which has to be taken apart and reduced in height by 20-30mm so bonnet clears the engine. Best bit is that it only cost £2.99 and does the same thing as engine mounts which cost £200+ for a set.

Wiring is the hardest part of the swap. The mechanicals are simples.

For the conversion I used corrado vr6 subframe, front cross member & rad mount - always a corrado vr6 being broken on ebay.

It took me around three weeks after all parts were collected. Time taken depends how thorough you are going to be. A straight swap with no cleaning, renewing of parts and painting can be done over a weekend if no problems are encoutered (unlikely:grin:). I cleaned up all subframes and the engine bay, painted everything and installed loads of new parts etc.  All in the engine conversion and painting of parts and bay etc cost around £600.

You should get good results if you plan on doing it over 3 months.
