I've driven a transporter, and I thought it was terrible, the seating position is awful, the pedals are way too high, the ride is uncomfortable and almost everything is an optional extra

Well done, you've just described a 'van'.

I much prefer the old transporters, the old ones are more reliable too, unlike the newer ones that are made of cheese.

You've not heard all about air-cooled reliability and 'waterleaker' engines in T25s then?

6 months old and it couldn't do more than 200 miles without developing an engine management fault of some kind that would cut the power then eventually stop the thing running at all.

Probably a DPF fault.  Easily resolved.

Of course, we could base our judgement on T5s on your experience of one - that would be really accurate.

As I know a lot of people who run them as commercial vehicles and campers, I know that in general they are very reliable, capable motors.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

No I described a new 'Transporter' That doesn't describe the old transporters, old or new Transits, whatever variant of the Vivaro/Traffic/Primastar, Sprinters, Combo van, corsa van, fiesta van, the Transit Connect, I could go on, all of which are not bad to drive when compared to the newer Transporters, granted with all of these most things would have been an optional extra.

I'm talking about 90's transporters that would run without a problem, even when it was missing a few litres of oil and water, never got a service and was used by a builder so got abused on a daily basis, never missing a beat, unlike the one my sisters old boss has that he uses to carry animal food from the shed to a bit of land he owns a few miles away from where he lives that detonated it's engine being less than 2 years old with less than 30k on the clock.

6 months old and it couldn't do more than 200 miles without developing an engine management fault of some kind that would cut the power then eventually stop the thing running at all.

Probably a DPF fault.  Easily resolved.

Then why was it not resolved? it went back to VW time and time again, got nowhere.

Not asking you to base your judgement on my opinion, to be honest I couldn't give a sh!t what you think about them or my opinion, just giving my opinion on them the same as you did, just that it happens that I now know them not to be very good and you know them to be "Epic" did you want me to base my judgement on your opinion? Am I not allowed my own view on them? I used to want a Transporter as a works van rather than the transit I had, that was until I drove one.

they are a good van.   expensive van yes but good van.

one places i work at have one,   engine was tweeked up as far as it would go the day it arrived and its been utterly abused since,  faster than a lot of cars.  more econmical than quite a lot of cars ( when you dont have the fuel card )  done 80 K being thrashed to f**k and it's not showing sings of dieing yet.

i've owned quite a lot of vans an driven used meany more.

vhauxhall vans are sh!t gearboxs made of chocolate  killed one at 30 k miles and i wasent even being nasty to it gboxes dont seem to make 50k
sprinter vans / lt35  pull well but don't do corners
festa van same as a festa  just nasty and not big enough to be usefull same goes for corsa van
transit connect /  FWD transits -  crap by default transits are menat to be RWD,  FWD ones are just oversized festas and usally gutless
transit 125T350  - epic van    drives the right wheels , goes round corners,  carrys weight well,  pulls trailers well,  puts up with abuse well
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

It could have been a Polo and it would probably have grenaded itself.  Current model diesel motors don't like a diet of short trips, hence the one Danny's described that had been thrashed to within an inch of its life has loved it.

I have no idea why VW wasn't able to resolve the fault.  Maybe you should ask them?  I presume you took it to multiple dealerships to get a resolution?  To only use one dealer to try and get a resolution to a difficult problem would be a bit silly.

Your original post made it sound like you'd only driven one T5.  If that was the case then basing your opinion on a sample of one would make your opinion pretty invalid.  It's like saying 'I once went to the Isle of Wight and had a cr*p holiday.  The Isle of Wight is a cr*p place for you to go on holiday'.  If you've driven lots of T5s and you simply don't like the driving position then that's a rather different situation.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Yes it got taken to more than one dealership, I even brought it home and took it to a garage round the corner from me who gets sent all the cars and vans that the main dealers can't fix, he is by far the best I know of for finding out what is wrong with anything and even he could not find the fault with it.

And I could never have a crap holiday on the isle of wight, hopefully coming out the at end of september if I can get the time off work, what's your address? I'll make sure to avoid you pop in and say hello.

Anyone that buys a Vivaro over a Transporter need their heads checking out.

Horrible, unreliable piles of crap. Gearboxes, EGR systems and fuel pumps seem to self destruct periodically.
