Looking for camera, new or 2nd hand?
« on: 18 June 2012, 14:50 »
Been using my dads Samsung nx5 for cars meets etc but want to get something for myself :)

Something that is easy to use but with the right lens etc will take sweet pics

Am I best of getting a brand new one or looking 2nd hand?

Guessing Nikon or canon? Think I prefer the Nikon, my sister has one and I really liked it

Looking to spend say up to £500 plus new lens and any other extras

Will mainly be for car meets, holiday then odd wedding, family occasions etc.

Thanks any tips welcome

I'm looking for a new camera too for about that budget.  I have a Nikon D40x which I'm going to sell and get a Nikon D5100 which is £520 on line at the moment.

I looked at second hand, but most seem not to fit my bill - needs to be Nikon, and have HD video capability.  Used ones seem to be the older generation which lack HD video.

Seen a few hd but think I would prefer to pay a lil extra and know that I've got a brand new one for piece of mind

Think my sister has the d40, good camera. But same as u would like something new.

Will pop into jessops or somewhere tomo but would be nice to have a rough idea of a few models to look at

2 year warranty on Nikon too

needs to be Nikon, and have HD video capability.

Just FYI Only the D800 and D4 offer full movie control, IIRC the D7000 has a sort of workaround, Nikon are a little behind canon in terms of video control at the moment (on the comsurer models).  This is only a factor if you're going to want to use manual exposure mode on video e.g. not let the camera decide the exposure.

Me personally I'm not too fussed about hd video, got a recorder for that so just want a good camera which is easy to use in manual mode

Why do you want an SLR?

Do you really want an SLR?

I've seen some fantastic snaps from this recently:

pro-ish-bridge cameras have come a long way lately.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

I want one because I've always been into photography and since getting into the car scene in the last year or so I have seen some cracking pictures and family have said I should go into photography, so I want to get my own one so I know I always have it and can use it more then hopefully get better

Do I really want one? Yes  otherwise I wouldn't have asked

Ahhh the world and it's wife are great photographers these days and may be turning pro.

If you want to 'go pro' then yes, maybe consider a DSLR, but have a look at this and another think:

Bear in mind you can get things like EF lens mounts for that.

Would I buy an SLR if I was buying a camera right now?

Tough call.
