Some b*stard of a previous owner thought a pressure wash would be good for mine too.

Now my engine bay is full of rusty nuts and bolts that break rather than undo.

So my engine bay detailing removes the 'elbow' from 'elbow grease' in a (probably vain) effort to stop the ones that remain from going rusty.

Yes a nice clean engine bay looks good, but it is no good to me if you can no longer adjust a belt tension or remove an engine mount coz the bolts are rusted up. Or bolt the battery down (which will fail at the next MOT).

a nut fell off attached to the screw part it was so rusty. it fell on top of the alternator i was confused as to what it was untill i seen lol.

You dont say which engine you have. i think the 16v looks perfect just cleaned but a gti 8v could probably do with a good clean and some paint on the rocker cover, head and block.

when i had my T-5R i spent loads modding the engine and as a result i was obsessed with cleaning the engine bay. this was my engine bay when i had that car. god i miss it 
this pic was taken when it was raining hence the rain drops on bits 

on my 8v tho looking at it no matter what you do i cant see it looking good. its just one of them engines that will never look good.

If I could bebothered I would upload a pic of my spotless 8v engine bay. It's now on 33,000 miles and looks brand new.

It does look good! All ac pipes are still shiney chrome, heat shields are bright silver. Lovely

You could replace the rusty nuts and bolts with stainless. If you need assistance knowing the thread pitch and sizes then you can buy a tool from pro bolt or similar.

and i cant really clean my car i live on the 4th floor in some apartments and dont have a lift... i meant stuff i can get to make it look good like polished stuff...
