Mk3 Rear Brake setup

I need some advice on upgrading my rear brake on my mk3, someone has recommanded to convert the rears to a mk4 setup.

What do i need to have the mk4 rear brake setup on my mk3?

The mk4 set up is essentially the same apart from the calipers are slightly less prone to seizing and made from alloy. The hose fittings are also different so you need braided conversion ones to make them fit.

i have never had a mk3 golf brake caliper seize  :undecided:
is that the only benafit for changing them?

Me either but i have had a mk4 sieze up a handbrake on the caliper.....

Pretty much apart from they weigh slightly less therefore you have less unsprung weight on the rear axle.

^^^This. Drums to disks is what I think the OP meant. I think he owns a Mk3 diesel.

I'm going to be fitting Mk2 16v set up and changing the calipers to Mk4  :wink:

Anyone who has never heard of a seized mk3 calliper, basically is not very savvy about mk3's :laugh:

iv had 2 go, they are a slight improvement over mk2 callipers but still do seize

i now run the MK4 rear callipers, as said direct fit, must use MK3 carriers, Mk3 pads or mk4 pads are fine. you do need the hoses making up as i did due to connections been the newer type where as the mk3 is same as mk2

i have pictures in my build thread

performance wise, not gonna see a improvement, but the mk4 callipers are aluminium so no seize and also look much better


id deffo recommend the mod if you get a seized calliper...  unfortunately not a cheap thing to do with needing hoses making up and the calipers themselves fetch good money as they are a firm fave with kit car owners too..

or the mk3s iv owned must have had really good calipers  :grin:
