Are new VAG's Cr@p?
« on: 15 June 2012, 14:43 »
My Father has had last 3 new cars from VAG last two have had major failures, one a turbo 3months out of warranty coming close 1k to replace. The latest has suffered ABS failure 1month out of warranty and will apparently cost 1500 to correct. Dealer in most recent has offered 70% discount on repair. When it was still in warranty the EGR valve packed up despite it living on the motorway. Cars have always be serviced with them.

Begs the question why would you fork out for a new car?

So new doesn't appear to = better

Over engineering was the last consensus when this debate came up, and I tend to agree.  The old cars were over engineered in the sense that they were built like tanks...now its about margins, and that means limitations to the engineering that goes into them.

But don't forget at least we are not American with some of the product recalls that they had in the 50/60s etc.

Too true, apparently the electronics in a new car make up 30% of the sticker price.
And they are built down to a cost  which results in crappy parts being used.

Feel bad for my Dad though, he started forking out for new cars as he said he was done messing about with cars

Does sound a little unlucky.

Its only a problem because your not expecting to need to fix a new car- with an ond one you expect it!

That my friend is a good point! But there again, the older ones are normally a cheap fix too...the newer ones are all electronic so sillyness with pricing for the components.  A piece of metal didnt cost as much to replace.

Definitely unlucky with his, or he drives em hard
