Oil temperature reading/sensor (again)
« on: 02 October 2003, 16:57 »
Ok, have read through all the other discussions on oil temperature readout but have not been able to solve my problem.

I've checked the top of the oil filter and the green wire appears to be intact, but my temp reading just displays 3 dashes, even after a long journey. All the other functions work perfectly. Where to look next?

is this on an 8v or 16v car? On my 16v the oil temp wasn't working when I bought it. I removed the wire from the sensor (located on the right rear side of the head if you are looking at the engine from in front, green wire with a black stripe) and grounded it to the block. it then read 160. This let me know that it was just a sender problem instead of a problem in the insturment cluster. I cleaned up the connection and then put everything back together and it has worked ever since. hope this helps.

Sorry, it's a GTi 16v late 1989 (G reg).

The wire to the sender is on top of the oil filter which is at the front of the engine compartment.

Disconnecting the wire and touching it to earth has no effect. So where does the other end go? what else do I check?

Mine is an 89 on an f plate. give the sensor on the back of the head off to the right hand side a go. it worked on mine. I took that one off and read 3 dashes. grounded it out and read 160. cleaned the contact and it is now reading fine. :)

Thanks for your persistance, rechecked it engine bay at the back of the block, and sure enough there was a unconnected green and black wire.

Tried earthing it but didn't get a reading.

Looked for a location to connect it and found one, connected it and started the engine leaving it running and after a while I get a reading :)

Thanks again.
