clumps when machine polishing?
« on: 12 June 2012, 20:21 »
hi all, just started getting into to detailing, bought a rotary polisher and have since read loads of threads, guides and watched videos on it. not quite sure what im doing wrong or if its the polish i'm using. when i machine polish i get build up of clumps of polish, i've had a quick googlle and general search about and not found anything conclusive, personally think i may have used to much polish or the lubricant of the polish is drying out. i'm hoping someone on here knows the most likely cause. i'm using autosmart polishes, in hindsight wish id bought poorboys ssr1&2.
appreciate any help
darren

Will be build up of polish on the pad mate. Less is more, and if you think its going dry and dragging on the paintwork, brush excess dry polish off the pad and start again.

I use a soft bristle interior cleaning brush. Anything similar should be fine, as long as it doesn't drag and catch the pad causing damage mate.

you're using too much polish by the sounds of things...

all you need is a couple of small 'blobs' per set.. any more than that and you will get a lot of dust etc

also, you only need to be giving your pad a light 'spritz' with some QD before you commence your first polish... the lubricants in the polish should do the rest for you

remember to work your polish properly, spread it evenly on a low speed... work it up to temperature on a medium setting and then work at the correct speed for the polish and the correction involved.

So give the pad a light spray with a qd aswell? Was using a light spray of water to keep the pad cool, would a quick detailer be better?

wash out the pads using warm water with washing up liquid... dry it, (use ya machine to spin the water out if in a rush)

go buy some megs 205 and put 2 x pea sized blobs on it and work in a 12" x 12" area. build up speeds from about 1000RPM unto 1500 then work back down finishing on 1000...

brilliant cheers will get some megs, only thing though #205 is a light cutting fininshing, my plan is to do my dads type r eventually which has had a bit of a hard life when it comes to washing it, dirty sponges, aqua blades ect. due to this its got some pretty bad swirls and scratches, do think the megs will be enough for this or do you think i might need a medium cut aswell? (obviously i understand its difficult to gauge how bad they are without seeing them)

You can get medium cut, but I wouldn't go to anything higher than that. I can't comment through experience, but I've heard Jap paintwork is pretty soft, and being 2 pack you need to be careful against taking too much off and obviously machine induced swirls/marring/hologramming with it being soft. Obviously start with light cut before moving up with the pads/polish.
