Is this a standard steering column?
« on: 10 June 2012, 20:40 »
Running on from my saga of a two piece steering column....I have now got the remaining half out.

Ken has come to my aid with another complete column but could anyone verify that my column (although in two halves!) is standard?

It's a mk2 16v on a 1991 h reg.

Note the tack welds at the bottom...is this standard?

Would hate to think I had this sorted with Ken's help only to find mine has been modified and a standard one no longer fits!

Cheers

All columns are two piece, only difference is the spindle size on steering wheel end, later 89 onwards are different from earlier years

its two piece so that on head on collision it collapses into itself rather than impaling the driver with the steering wheel

Thanks Gambit, that's great. What holds the two halves together normally?

Been years since i looked at one but i think there is just a little tab that stops them coming apart though pull hard enough and the tab will fold and you end up with it in two bits. Though you can put them back together again
